Verbal inflection at a distance∗
نویسنده
چکیده
Danish has a verbal system much like the English one in which each auxiliary determines the inflection of the following verbal element. In (1a), for instance, the modal m̊a (must) requires the following auxiliary, perfect have (have), to appear in the infinitival form and have requires gemme (hide) to appear in the past participle form. Any other forms of have and gemme are ungrammatical in (1a). The relevant inflectional options are given in (2) below.

Events in Space
Many languages make use of verbal forms to express spatial relations and distinctions. Spatial notions are lexicalized into verb roots, as in come and go; they are expressed by derivational morphology such as Ineseño Chumash maquti ‘hither and thither’ or Shasta ehée ‘downward’ (Mithun 1999: 140-141); and, I will argue, they are expressed by verbal inflectional morphology in Nez Perce. This ver...
متن کاملA cross-linguistic look at VP-ellipsis and verbal speech errors
This paper argues that consideration of spontaneous speech errors provides insight into cross-linguistic analyses of syntactic phenomena. In particular, I claim that differences in the distribution of non-parallel VP-Ellipsis constructions in English and German, as well as variation in the spontaneously-occurring verbal speech errors, is explained by a parametric analysis of variation in the in...
متن کاملVerbal Inflection in Hindi: A Distributed Morphology Approach
In this paper, we provide a complete description of Hindi verbal inflection within the framework of Distributed morphology. We discuss the categories that are visible on the verb itself and on associated auxiliaries. We show how both analysis and generation are possible using this model. We also discuss the implementation of such linguistically motivated analysis in a morphological analyzer for...
متن کاملThe Production of Nominal and Verbal Inflection in an Agglutinative Language: Evidence from Hungarian
The contrast between regular and irregular inflectional morphology has been useful in investigating the functional and neural architecture of language. However, most studies have examined the regular/irregular distinction in non-agglutinative Indo-European languages (primarily English) with relatively simple morphology. Additionally, the majority of research has focused on verbal rather than no...
متن کاملInflection and Movement in Old English
Rich verbal inflection has been argued (a) to license pro-drop (e.g. Safir 1985); (b) to be connected to overt Verb-second (Platzack & Holmberg 1989; van Gelderen 1993; Roberts 1996); and (c) to activate the AGR(eement) and T(ense) positions (Bobaljik & Jonas 1996). The connections in (b) and (c) follow if one assumes that the relationship between morphology and syntax is a direct one: elements...
